Potential of 23Na-MRI in muscular sodium channel diseases

The purpose of this study was to show the feasibility of 23Na-MRI for the examination of patients with paramyotonia congenita (PC) and testing for specific therapies. A density adapted 3D Radial sampling scheme was used to measure the sodium concentration in the lower leg muscles of a patient with confirmed PC, a muscular sodium channelopathy, and of a healthy volunteer. After cooling one leg the sodium concentration in the patientâ??s cooled leg increased, whereas in the volunteerâ??s cooled leg no significant difference was observed. Furthermore a zinc medication was tested in the patient.
