Silent high resolution echo-planar imaging for auditory fMRI

In fMRI, acoustic scanner noise causes an unwanted BOLD signal in the auditory cortex. High resolution imaging using EPI with PAT produces high sound pressure level (SPL) due to fast switching of trapezoidal gradients. The aim of this work is to extend a silent sinusoidal EPI (sEPI) by PAT. This combination results in a high resolution sequence that reduces the SPL compared to the conventional EPI PAT. The developed sEPI PAT sequence can reduce the SPL of a 3T-scanner by 10 dB compared to EPI PAT, while having the same resolution (128 x 128 matrix) and echo time (39 ms).
