Health Economics

Welcome to the website for the Health Economics Department. The department was newly established in October 2024 and is headed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Mayrhofer. The Department of Health Economics focuses its research on evaluating the cost-effectiveness of healthcare services, medical decision theory and analysis, the collection and analysis of (patient) preferences (particularly higher-order risk preferences), the application of biostatistical methods, and the development and validation of AI applications in medicine.

The department’s research currently encompasses three main areas:

  • AI and Data Science in Medicine
  • Preferences and Decision-Making
  • Health Economic Evaluations

The department’s researchers employ both empirical and theoretical approaches, as well as experimental methods. All areas of research have in common that they are directly related to primary and/or secondary prevention. Furthermore, digital health plays a central role in the areas of health economic evaluations and AI applications in medicine.
