STMM Inauguration
The Medical Faculty Mannheim’s School of Translational Medicine hosted two significant events on July 17th, 2025, marking important milestones for the institution's research community. The ceremonial inauguration of the School of Translational Medicine (STMM), formally established this institutional milestone. The STMM, initiated in 2022, now offers structured doctoral programs for both Dr. sc. hum. and Dr. med. students at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and career support for young researchers through dedicated funding programs. Distinguished guests including Prof. Patzel-Mattern, Heidelberg University’s Vice Rector Innovation and Transfer, Dr. Dose, Head of the Department for University Medicine at the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Württemberg and Prof. Sergij Goerdt, Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, provided opening addresses, while young scientists PD Dr. Anne Thomann and PD Dr. Dr. Lukas Bunse presented cutting-edge research on gut-brain-microbiome interactions and cellular therapies for central nervous system diseases. The ceremony was accompanied by the UMM Orchestra's string quartet and concluded with a champagne reception, celebrating the establishment of the STMM as a center for translational medicine research and education.
STMM Summer Symposium 2025
The Medical Faculty Mannheim’s School of Translational Medicine hosted two significant events on July 17th, 2025, marking important milestones for the institution's research community. The STMM Summer Symposium 2025 provided a forum for doctoral students and early career researchers to engage in scientific exchange, featuring an impulse talk on "Ultrasound & Holography" by Dr. Kai Melde and selected student presentations. A panel discussion on post-doctoral careers complemented the program. Flash talks and poster sessions across major research areas including cancer, cardiovascular studies, immunology, and neuroscience allowed students to showcase their work through various presentation formats. Outstanding research contributions were recognized through poster prizes awarded to Zeinab Abbasi and Tian Lan. Neda Ordoodary won the audience award for her poster.
Members’ assembly 2025
On Wednesday, May 14th, the School of Translational Medicine Mannheim (STMM) held its annual members’ assembly. All early-career researchers working at the Medical Faculty Mannheim were invited to exchange ideas and propose new projects to improve their training environment. At the same occasion, the newly elected members’ representatives were introduced. The new committee consists of two representatives for Dr. med. candidates, one representative for postdoctoral researchers, and six representatives for Dr. sc. hum. candidates, who collectively represent the interests of all early-career researchers at the various institutions of our faculty.
Anyone can contact the representatives directly with questions, course requests, or event suggestions (contact details on the members pages). We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the outgoing representatives who have looked after the concerns of doctoral candidates and young researchers since the launch of the STMM in 2022!
New Dr. med. doctoral program launched on April 1st 2025 - Good scientific practice as basic training for young medical researchers
Students who apply for a Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine Mannheim from 1 April 2025 onwards will, on acceptance, automatically be joining the new structured Dr. med. doctoral programme. In preparation for their doctorate, interested candidates can attend an information event (next date expected in May/June, register here) and explore training, exchange and scholarship offers on Moodle. Those who have already submitted their doctoral application should also create a doctoral candidate profile on LEARN, where they can book courses and have activities recognised.
Good scientific practice is an integral part of the new programme and is intended to equip doctoral students with a solid basis for their research. To this end, students can access a self-study course on Moodle as they embark on their doctoral journey and attend an in-person course as soon as their doctoral application is accepted. Both courses will be compulsory for doctoral candidates from 1 April 2025.
Successful Industry & Innovation Days on March 13 and 14, 2025
As every year in March, the STMM had invited many exciting guests to the Industry & Innovation Days: networking, pitch, and presentation coaches, young researchers and innovators, as well as experts from industry, clinic, and academia. The participants – doctoral students and other interested parties – had time to learn about various professions and career opportunities, to network, and to discover what it really means to be an entrepreneur.
