Innate Immunity and sepsis

Innate immunity is the very first line of defense against infection. It is also triggered by severe sterile tissue injury. In either case, if they are not controlled, innate immune responses can promote systemic inflammation, organ dysfunction and long-term immunosuppression, and, thereby, can become the root cause of sepsis.

In the lab, we study changes in subpopulations of innate immune cells from patient blood and their immunometabolism under inflammatory conditions, including hypoxia, in vitro to gain insight into sepsis pathogenesis and discover predictive and diagnostic sepsis classifiers.
