The Faculty of Medicine Mannheim provides various programmes to support young clinical scientists at different points in their careers. Within the support for clinician scientists, it is possible to follow the structured ICON programme.

ICON

Despite enormous progress in medicine in recent decades, the increase in complex chronic diseases such as cancer, metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases poses major challenges for all clinical disciplines. The ICON programme promotes the academic career of clinician scientists in the translational medicine of complex chronic diseases and thus also the improvement of care for this constantly growing group of patients. The programme is part of the School of Translational Medicine at the Mannheim Medical Faculty (STMM). Thanks to a special agreement with the North Baden District Medical Association (Bezirksärztekammer Nordbaden), 12 months of research time are credited towards further training (WB).

Target group: WB assistants after at least 2 years of WB, young medical specialists (TVA1 or Ä2) with an above-average degree and completed doctorate or equivalent degree with ‘magna cum laude’ or better.

Programme details:

  • Duration 3 years, 50% release from clinical duties
  • Individual research project in the context of complex chronic diseases
Track A: Development of a clinical study
Track B: Conducting a translational or basic research project
  • Accompanying training programme: basics of clinical studies, translational research and digital medicine/data integration as well as the clinic of chronic diseases, soft skills (mandatory for recognition of up to 12 months of research as WB by the BÄK Nordbaden)
  • 3-month rotation in another specialised field
  • Accompaniment by an independent/independent mentor

Selection procedure: competitive. The evaluation is carried out by an internal selection committee.
