Seminar/Workshop: Image acquisition, processing, presentation and analysis

11/11/2022

The course consists of 3 parts, each lasting around 1.5 hours. The first part of the course covers the basics of image types, dynamic range, image formats, image color modes, and how to represent color images in a way that color blind people can understand. In the second part, ways to produce optimal images are discussed, including specific aspects of image acquisition (e.g. setting exposure, field illumination, white balance), image processing (including acceptable and unacceptable processing of scientific images). Some aspects of image representation in figures are also covered. In the third part, the software Fiji/ImageJ is briefly introduced and some selected examples of image analysis are explained and practiced. The focus of the course is on images generated by microscopy and gel/western blot imagers. Vector graphics such as charts and drawings are also discussed.

Time and Date: 9:00–15:00, November 11, 2022

Lecturer: Dr. Boyan Garvalov

Place: seminar room in house 42

Prerequisites: For the third part of the course (image analysis), participants should have the Fiji software installed and running on their computers. Basic familiarity with this software is helpful but not required.

Number of participants: max. 10–12
