Mannheim Comprehensive Medical Systems Technology Campus (MCSC)

In an environment of increasingly complex medical procedures and distributed data, a structural integration of medical systems technology in preclinical and clinical research is essential in order to develop solutions for an efficient and individualized precision medicine.

The Mannheim Comprehensive Medical Systems Technology Campus (MCSC) focuses on apparatus and process-orientated medical technology, digital health and early detection, medical data platforms and integrated diagnostics. Therefore, the MCSC is an innovation center for research in and application of new diagnostic procedures and minimally invasive therapies in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

In recent years, the Mannheim Institute for intelligent Systems in Medicine (MIISM) has established itself as a center for medical systems technology research and development under the umbrella of Heidelberg University. In addition to the specialist groups within the MIiSM cluster, all of which are part of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, the MCSC also includes other internal and external research institutions, such as the Institute for Medical Technology IMT as a joint institution of Heidelberg University and Technical University of Applied Sciences Mannheim, the Fraunhofer IPA Healthcare Technologies and Processes department, the Center for Integrative Diagnostics, the Preclinical Imaging Center and the DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute.

The Mannheim Molecular Intervention Environment (M²OLIE) Research Campus is also part of the MCSC. Under the leadership of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, a total of 26 partners from research and industry are working there to realize a patient pathway on which cancer patients with oligometastases are treated gently and efficiently in a customized manner in the form of a so-called closed-loop process. The data integration center at the UMM, part of the MIRACUM medical informatics consortium within the BMBF's Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), provides the technical and organizational conditions for cross-site data usage processes between patient care and medical research.

The MCSC also includes the INSPIRE platform, a development and testing platform for digital health and medical products in Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar, which is the primary point of contact for medical technology companies and provides direct access to various real-world laboratories such as the INSPIRE Living Lab, the M²AXI Usability Lab and also the various clinical departments at the UMM. Moreover, the MCSC cooperates closely with the Mannheim Medical Technology (MMT) Campus of the City of Mannheim. This enables a continuous exchange between the research institutes at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and the flourishing start-up scene in the field of medical technology in the direct neighborhood of UMM.
