Science and Pizza – from and for young scientists: Journal Club & Project Reports

The STMM members’ representatives have established a monthly seminar series from and for young scientists. Invited speakers or (doctoral) students themselves present their latest research, scientific literature and other science-related topics every third Friday of the month at 5pm.

On 15 March 2024, there will be another open Journal Club and presentations of Project Reports.

Participation in this event can be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the Dr. sc. hum. curriculum.

Lab course: Primer to Molecular methods in clinical diagnostics

11–14/03/2024

This course addresses molecular methods especially for beginners. Participants learn about the experimental basics of modern diagnostics such as RNA extraction from clinical material, cDNA Synthesis, primer design, PCR, hybridization, Microarray production and use, Cytogenetics and CGH in lectures and practical lessons.

Prerequisites: Personal lab coat

Course materials and additional information:
Participation can be credited with the corresponding number of hours in category C6 of the curriculum for the structured Dr. sc. hum. programme.

Save the date: Industry and Innovation Days 2024

7–8/03/2024

On 7 and 8 March 2024, the annual Industry & Innovation Days will take place, organised by the STMM in collaboration with the Translational Medical Research (TMR) Master's programme. In&Inno is dedicated to innovation, career paths in industry and elsewhere, and gives participants networking opportunities.

Participation in this event can be counted towards the Dr. sc. hum. curriculum with a corresponding number of credit points/hours.

On 16 February 2024, Dr. Wilko Thiele will speak about “Nutrition & Cancer: The Effects of Ketogenic Diet on Mammary Tumor Growth & Metastasis”. The presentation will start already at 16 hrs.

Statistics courses: SAS and R

September/October 2023

From 25-29 September and 16-20 October 2023, statistics courses, complemented by tutorials in SAS and R will be held in cooperation with the Master's programme Translational Medical Research (TMR).

Every Brain Needs Music: The Neuroscience of Making and Listening to Music

“Every Brain Needs Music” is an entertaining and informative multi-media lecture and concert filled with music, humor, and discussions that show how our brains and music work in harmony. Professor Larry Sherman (Oregon Health & Science University), a neuroscientist, author, public speaker, and lifelong musician is the co-author of Every Brain Needs Music: The Neuroscience of Making and Listening to Music (Columbia University Press, 2023) and has given public talks on the neuroscience of music around the globe. He uses visuals and live music to consider music in all the ways we encounter it―teaching, learning, practicing, listening, composing, improvising, and performing―showing how the brain functions and even changes in the process.

Symposium „PONS“ – Pathology: Opportunities for Newcomers in Science

28 – 29/9/2023

On 28 and 29 September 2023, the UMM Institute of Pathology will be holding an interdisciplinary symposium to present new developments in the field of modern pathology, as well as the new focus areas of the UMM Institute of Pathology, and to build bridges to other disciplines and institutes.

Interested doctoral students and young scientists are cordially invited to submit contributions for the poster sessions.

Cubex One: MedTech in Mannheim

On September 7, 2023 from 3 to 4.30 p.m., you can get to know the Mannheim medtech ecosystem at Cubex One, the centre for start-ups and expertise in the field of medical technology.

The Cluster of medical technologies, the Life Science Accelerator Baden-Württemberg, the CUBEX medtech startup centre, the Inspire Living Lab and the Usability Lab will be presenting themselves.

The event is organised as part of the Translational Medical Research (TMR) master's programme, but doctoral students and interested young scientists are invited to join.

Networking Event of the Institute of Medical Technology (IMT)

19/07/2023 – 13:00 – 17:00 hrs

The Institute of Medical Technology (IMT) and the Young Leaders Club of the research focus Medical Systems Technologies are organising a social event in July for young scientists in the field of medical technology at the Mannheim Medical Faculty and the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. There will be keynote speeches on the state of medical technology at both institutions. Afterwards, there will be a speed-dating session so that the young scientists can get to know each other better.

Members‘ Assembly 

16/05/2023 – 16:30-18:00 hrs

On Tuesday 16/05/2023 from 16:30 to 18:00 hrs the first Members’ Assembly of the STMM will take place. Members are all doctoral students (Dr.med. /Dr.med.dent. and Dr.sc.hum.) and all Master students of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, as well as all other young scientists in structured programmes, e.g. the Clinician Scientists of the ICON and MACS programmes and postdocs in research training groups. We cordially invite all members and other interested parties to get involved in the scientific environment they envision!

Science Day

The Mannheim Medical Faculty, within its MaReCuM medical degree programme, puts special emphasis on ensuring scientificity, the application of scientific methods and principles. At the "Science Day", students will get insights of scientific work through presentations of the research foci and the recently established School of Translational Medicine (STMM) at the Mannheim Medical Faculty, as well as general information on research work and doctoral theses, plus funding opportunities for young scientists.

LIMa Bioimage Analysis Course

02/05/2023 – 04/05/2023

LIMa Core Facility is organizing an introduction course on microscopy image analysis, “Introduction to Microscopy Image Analysis using ImageJ & Imaris” in collaboration with Imaris user support team of Andor Technology. The course includes introductions to important theoretical principles and hands-on practices of using software ImageJ and Imaris for automated processing of image data. The course is designed for PhD/MD/Master students and researchers in life sciences who are complete beginners for analyzing microscopy image data. No prerequisite knowledge is required.

Cubex-Tour for Students

On 22 February 2023, from 1 to 4 pm, the Cubex - Centre for Start-ups and Competences in Medical Technology will offer a presentation followed by a tour of the Hybrid OR and the Inspire Living Lab.

The event has been organised as part of the Translational Medical Research (TMR) Master's programme. There are still a few places available, so interested PhD students can attend. More detailed information about the programme is available upon registration.
