Images under Creative Commons licenses

Open-i

A collection of special biomedical images under partial CC licenses (how may the image be used by others? See below) is available with the Open-i Open Access Biomedical Image Search Engine. This is a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) with about 4 million images from Open Access articles in PubMed Central. The database is supplemented by further smaller Biomedical Image Collections. All sources are listed in the FAQ. Updates are made several times a year.

If a CC license is available, the license is linked below the image, see screenshot.

If there is no license notice, please contact the publishing journal directly.

Creative Commons Licenses

Creative Commons Licenses (CC Licenses) are standard licenses published by the US-based non-profit organization Creative Commons. They are not limited to a specific type of media and allow an author, when publishing his or her work, to determine in a transparent and legally secure manner which forms of use are granted to others.

The total of 6 CC licenses differ in whether a used work must be published under the same license and whether arrangements and/or commercial use are included in the release. The CC-BY license (see screenshot) offers the greatest leeway in this respect, which - assuming correct citation - imposes no further restrictions on use. Detailed information and FAQ can be found at Creative Commons.
