innate Immunity and sepsis
Innate immunity is the very first line of defense against infection. If misguided, it can however also lead to systemic inflammation and organ dysfunction and become the root cause of sepsis. The goal of our research is to identify new strategies to diagnose and treat sepsis in the intensive care unit (ICU) by combining computational and laboratory investigation.
We found that an algorithmic description of the dynamics of systemic inflammation and machine learning in a comprehensive set of features in electronic medical records can identify sepsis onset in different groups of ICU patients.
In the lab, we study changes in populations of innate immune cells from patient blood and their immunometabolism under inflammatory conditions in vitro to gain a better process understanding of innate immune responses during sepsis and to discover new sepsis biomarkers.
