Christian Schmahl takes over Chair of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine

Prof. Dr. Christian Schmahl has taken over the Chair of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine at the Mannheim Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Martin Bohus, who retired in September 2021. Schmahl has been Medical Director of the Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine at the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) since 2015.

He has helped to develop innovative therapeutic services at the CIMH, including a three-month inpatient treatment program for patients with borderline personality disorder and for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as the Adolescent Center, which offers continuous treatment throughout the entire adolescent phase from 15 to 25 years of age. A new focus will be the treatment of eating disorders.

Schmahl's research focuses on the psychopathology of stress-associated disorders, in particular borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, the aim is to further improve psychotherapeutic treatment and develop new interventions, such as real-time MRI-supported neurofeedback.
